The property traces to a 405-acre farm George Harris bought in 1971 as a failed investment; he later planned to donate it for a summer camp, which merged with Rev. Richard C. Halverson's (a former U.S. Senate chaplain) vision inspired by Forest Home camp, and the retreat was dedicated in 1987.
